Every year, thousands of students compete in the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest. This year, the Creative Writing class joined the battle and showcased their amazing writing skills.

Last November, the Creative Writing class sent in their best writing pieces for the Scholastic Art and Writing contest.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” Leslie Laird, Creative Writing teacher, said. “It’s national and they have ten or hundreds of thousands of entries per year in various genres of writing.”

When the class got their results back in February, almost all of Mrs. Laird’s class had either made it on to the honorable mentions list or had won a medal.

“I entered this competition because I thought that it would be fun and that it would further my career to get my name out there,” Ashlyn Long (10) said. “Although I didn’t win, I still did pretty good and [the judges] liked my piece.”

The class also had one of their very own, sophomore Emily Lara, take home a gold medal in poetry.

“I’ve never been good at poetry and so turning in a poetry piece and then having it win in something was really amazing,” Lara said. “It let me know that I can write poetry, even if it’s bad, I can do it.”

The Creative Writing class spent many days revising and editing their pieces to make it the best they could get it and to showcase their amazing writing skills.

“We wrote a lot of times,” Maria Longoria (11) said. “We practiced and edited and stuff so it could be perfect.”

The Scholastic Art and Writing contest is open to not just all types of writing, but also all types of art like painting and photography.

“I think it’s for everybody,” Lara said. “So if you’re good at writing, you should totally do it. If you’re good at drawing, you totally [should] do it because it’s fun, even if you don’t win.”
